I've been a bit busy lately. Family from New York and Florida, friends from the neighborhood, colleagues from work and lifelong friends from afar joined us to celebrate The Missus' 50th birthday last night. (To the left is a picture of her from 1956.) We've had company for a week now, so I've been out-of-touch with you. I hope to be back later this week.Fifty. Wow. It's a milestone in anyone's life, and she's handled it with her usual style and flair. There's never been a better woman, and I'm so happy forty of us got together to celebrate the big event.
What a great time. The celebration actually started with a small party on her actual birthday, which was last Thursday. We all went out to dinner, then had a a small birthday cake at home. Dontcha just love the cat glasses on the birthday girl? She was eight years old then, circa 1963.We met in 1982. We both worked for Montgomery Ward; she was a buyer, and I was a human resources staff weenie. I moved on a few months later to Burger King while she stayed with Monkey Wards.
Then, the layoff. Things changed, and the stores closed down in South Florida. If our relationship was strong enough, she would stay. She had received a job offer in North Carolina; we had dinner to discuss what to do, and I let her go. To this day, I'm not too sure why I made that ill-fated decision; I guess I had to "find myself." She moved in the winter of 1985. (To the left is her high school graduation picture in 1973)I kept in touch with her, of course. Very quickly, I realized I loved her and she was the one for me. I asked her if I could visit. She wasn't too sure what was going on, but I knew exactly what needed to happen. I went there knowing that I would ask for her hand in marriage if she would forgive me for letting her leave. I asked her at 5:00 in the morning as she was getting ready to go to the airport. How romantic, eh? You'd think I would have a wonderful dinner followed by a walk in the park so I could beg for her forgiveness. Well, as it turns out, I've done that several times since we've been married, so I guess it all worked out.
She said yes. In fact, she was so dazed, she somehow got on the wrong plane the next morning
for a business trip to New York. When she called her mother to announce the good news, MIL asked, "Who?" So much for my ego. To the right is how things worked out eventually; that's us in Miami in 1993.We've spent 23 of her 50 years together. I wanted to tell you what a wonderful woman she is, and how dedicated she is as a mother, daughter, granddaughter, aunt, wife, and neighbor. She's one in a million, and I'm eternally grateful she's by my side.
Of course, this weekend's party was a great time. I put together a 25-minute PowerPoint slide show set to all the 1955 classics and there was a combination of laughter and ahhhs from the group. One of the top songs from 1955? (We're Gonna) Rock Around The Clock by Bill Haley and His Comets. That's how the show started. What a great song.
If you met The Missus, you would instantly fall in love with her. She's caring, compassionate, patient, insightful, empathetic, warm, and a true friend. I wish I could say more about her, but you get the idea. She's one-of-a-kind.So, on her 50th birthday, I wanted to share with everyone how special she is and tell you how many friends she has. We're all better people because we know her.
Happy Birthday, Dear. I love you.

So sweet! Great tribute to an apparently great lady. Happy 50th to her.
Happy 50th, Mrs. Fred! What a nice tribute. I'm so glad you found each other!
I love her cat's eye glasses. My wife (Me Wonder Woman Pez) had those when she was a wee girl too.
Super! May you BOTH continue to live happily ever after. We guys seem to do better when we find that right woman to love and share our lives.....keeps us outta the sports bars and trying to make up new lies to impress the women.
ROCK AROUND THE CLOCK. I have an original 45 rpm of that.....I think it used to belong to an uncle of mine, as well as the old '50's classic, BLACK DEMIN TROUSERS.....he wore black demin trousers, and motorcycle boots, with a black leather jacket with an eagle on the back. He had a hunk of 'cycle, that took off like a gun, that fool was the terror of highway 101.....
Happy Birthday Missus Fred... you are both blessed. May you both share many more wonderful birthdays together.
You said you met when you were a human resources stiff weenie? Oh, I see.... staff weenie. Excuse my error.
Happy Birthday to the Missus!! I wish her many more!
You are a beautiful, loving couple. I love it when couples grow in love for each other over the years.
My hubby and I will celebrate 22 years of marriage on Nov. 12th.
I hope your wife feels treasured and very loved.
Happy 50th b-day!!!!!!
Fred, Congradulations on your lovely wife's 50th birthday...You are very lucky to have her, just remember that always....
I can't believe she let you put that picture of her in those glasses up. I guess all of us that were around then had a pair of them, including me.
I worked for Monkey Wards for seven years. Four months after I got married I went to work for them. (Oct. 71 - March 78) My husband had been working for them in the hardware department and when he joined the police force, I got a job there because it was within walking distance of our first apartment. We only had one car at the time so I walked across the street and he took the car downtown. I loved working at Wards. I started out in the men's dept, then on to hosiery and then five years as dept. manager of Dept 45. (better jewelry). Six weeks before my first child was born, I left Wards to become a stay at home mom. You just brought back many memories...
Well, please let your wife know that your blogging friends wish her a very merry Birthday....
Happy Birthday Ms. Fred! I LOVE the cat glasses - I'd wish the trend to return, but I wouldn't look good in them. What a wonderful thing you found this special woman and KNEW it. How lucky you both are.
I worked for Wards too. I worked in jewelry for about 9 months back in 1988/89, just before I found my gov't. job. It was a nice place to work - but I couldn't hack the commission work. I was far too much a planner to not know what my paycheck would be.
sitting here crying cause this is so sweet...tell her WW says HB!
Aww, that's sweet. But does she know you posted pics of her in cat glasses? Are you gonna get in trouble? I'm just kidding! Congratulations on a happy marriage and a fun birthday party. Remembering stuff is always great.
Excellent tribute...It's wonderful to hear how much you love her.
Something to aspire to!

Hey, Fred. I found you through Jef (Thunderstorm) and I see that many of my blog buddies (Vavoom, RT, an80snut, etc) all read you and I know if they're reading you it must mean something!
This post says it all! Too sweet! Happy be-lated Birthday to the Missus!
Congrats, Fred, on picking a wife from a great year! '55 is my year, too. Happy Bday, Mrs. Fred!
It's so nice to have someplace to hang where I don't have to feel guilty for having a great love and marriage.
My mate is no good at creating parties, but he got me a lovely diamond ring for my 50th.
When you are all young, foxy and healthy you expect a guy to be nuts enough about you to get you a costly ring.
When you are older and more used up and they get you a diamond it means they know you like shiney rocks and love you very much.
Love em' while ya got em'!
Happy belated birthday Fred's wife:) I like the pictures you posted. It added a certain charm to your blog. Love it. Hope it was an interesting and fun day
what a lovely tribute. happy birthday Mrs.Fred! many more happy ones to follow!

Thanks for all the comments, guys. I appreciate them very much. I'm sure The Missus does, too.
This was about the most beautiful thing I've ever read. I think both you and your wife sound like lucky people. I wish her 50 more years of bliss with you by her side.
Great story, Fred. Thank you for sharing that with all of us. It's amazing how the paths we take in life really don't make the most sense sometimes but yours definitely did.
P.S. Fred, I almost didn't recognize you in these photos without the toilet seat on your head!
Nice. Very nice.
Here's to many more happy years for you and the missus! :-)
Happy birthday Mrs. Fred! You are beautiful! Oh to be fifty again ... how I long for those days!
Thanks, Amias. We go through the routine again in 2007 when I turn 50. I'm going to hide out somewhere.
